Why couldn't Harry's parents just shoot Voldemort or something?

First off, that's like using a gun against a psychic type pok�mon. It's not going to work. Projectiles, no matter how fast, can be negated using simple "stop & drop" levitation. Haven't you ever seen the Matrix?!? Seriously, what a stupid question. Wizards use MAGIC. MAGIC MUST DEFEAT MAGIC!!! Shoot, even Jade from Jackie Chan Adventures knows THAT much.
