What is the "point" of religion?

what is the point of religion? is it just to make people feel better about the fact that they will die and there will be nothing after and that their personality and identity will die with their mind? why are people afraid of the concept of nothingness? or is it just to fleece the mes and keep the mes under controll and the wealth in the hands of a privileged few? or is there something to it?
